We all have heard a lot about this year’s Nobel Prizes, I’m sure. One claim that I came across regularly is the notion  that the US are the leading nation in Nobel awards. And for once, it’s not even fake news. Here is the list of the 10 leading countries :

Rank –  Country  –  Number of laureates –  Number of prizes

  1. United States 424 (427 prizes)
  2. United Kingdom 144 (145 prizes)
  3. Germany 116
  4. France 77 (78 prizes)
  5. Sweden 34
  6. Japan 33
  7. Russia/Soviet Union 30
  8. Canada 28
  9. Switzerland 27
  10. Austria 25

Impressive!

But hold on, that’s grossly misleading! Surely, we need to account for the size of each country!

Once we do that, the list looks very different, and the US fall into 15th place. Here is the list ranking countries by Nobel laureates per 10 million people, including all prizes and based on a common compilation up to 2013:

Rank Country Laureates / 10 million People
1 Saint Lucia 109.726
2 Luxembourg 37.709
3 Switzerland 30.949
4 Iceland 30.346
5 Sweden 30.300
6 Denmark 24.915
7 Austria 24.720
8 Norway 21.814
9 United Kingdom 19.165
10 East Timor 17.654
11 Israel 15.518
12 Ireland 12.967
13 Germany 12.572
14 Netherlands 11.337
15 United States 10.842

Since this blog is about so-called alternative medicine (SCAM), let’s also see what the contribution of SCAM has been. Here is a list of Nobel prizes in Physiology/Medicine by healthcare professions:

Rank Profession Number of Nobel Prizes in Physiology or Medicine Rationale
1 Physician / Scientist (M.D. / Ph.D.) All Laureates (over 230 individuals) Virtually all recipients hold an M.D., a Ph.D., or both.
2 Acupuncturist 0 No Nobel Prize has ever been awarded for a discovery related to the principles or practice of acupuncture.
2 Chiropractor 0 No Nobel Prize has ever been awarded for a discovery related to the principles or practice of chiropractic.
2 Herbalist 0 No Nobel Prize has been awarded specifically for herbalism.
2 Homeopath 0 No Nobel Prize has ever been awarded for a discovery related to the principles or practice of homeopathy.
2 Naturopath 0 No Nobel Prize has ever been awarded for a discovery related to the principles or practice of naturopathy.
2 Osteopath 0 No Nobel Prize has ever been awarded for a discovery related to the principles or practice of osteopathy.

If any of these SCAM modalities were real, effective or plausible, they would require a fundamental re-think of some of the basic assumptions in medicine. This would surely be worthy of a Nobel Prize! The fact that no Nobel has yet been awarded to a SCAM practitioner should make us think.

Of course, it all could be a monumental conspiracy against SCAM … but if you believe that, you probably also believe that the Nobel committee conspired against Trump.

  • I used the Nobel Prize argument with moderate success when working with people who claimed to suffer from Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS):

“If I can conclusively demonstrate that you are indeed capable of sensing electromagnetic fields from Wi-Fi, smartphones, cell phone towers and other similar sources, then this would be a major scientific breakthrough, perhaps even Nobel Prize material. And I’ll be sure to share any scientific and material success with you – so let’s get going with our measurements!”

So far, I have not found anyone who can actually sense electromagnetic fields – except of course the ones we can all sense, i.e. infrared (heat) and visible light.

  • DUllman is surely already champing at the bit to explain in an aggressive, lamenting tone that homeopaths ABSOLUTELY deserve a Nobel Prize and that only the arrogant mainstream medical establishment is preventing them from receiving this honor.

    😀 😀 😀

  • I think it is worth noting (if you have the date) how many of those Nobel laureates from US are first generation immigrants.

    • good point!
The number of US Nobel laureates who are first-generation immigrants is 115 to 148, depending on the criteria and cutoff year used by various reports.

      • @Professor

Thank you for that statistic. Roughly, a third of US Nobel laureates were born outside US. It is a testament of how US massively benefited from immigration, not to mention millions of first-generation immigrants (including myself) past and present who work(ed) in various industries that drive US economy. Many of them are now being systematically stripped of their rights, harassed, kidnapped, thrown in jail and often thrown out of the country without due process.

That said, after living in this country for 24 years I have decided to leave. I am immigrating to your homeland of Germany in a couple of weeks.

  • Prof. Ernst. You forgot to include in your list of providers the following professions. Dentists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists, just to name a few. No one in these professions has won a Nobel Prize either. For the sake of completeness, you should have included the budgets available for all these professions to do the research. I suppose you forgot to do this.

    • 1) are dentists, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and podiatrists SCAM practitioners, in your view?
      2) research budgets are open to all healthcare frofessionals, even homeopaths, acupuncturists etc.

  • Prof. Ernst. Recent research into acupuncture. I am surprised (not) that you did not include it in your recent criticism.

If you read your written article carefully, you will see that you wrote, “Here is a list of Nobel prizes in Physiology/Medicine by healthcare professions”:
My question to you is, “Why did you not include the physiotherapy (especially as they use dry-needling in their supposed care), dentistry, podiatry and occupational therapy. You could also include audiology in your list of healthcare professions that have never won a Nobel Prize.
I am just pointing out to you that your article is incomplete and bias, because using your logic you could say that these professions are SCAMS because they have not won a Nobel Prize.

    • I do apologise – I had assumed you were bright enough to read the full and short paragraph which should make it clear:
