Homeopathy International‘, is a London-based membership organisation which connects practitioners of homeopathic medicine, homeopathy colleges and the homeopathy profession. They currently issue the following ‘COVID-19 advice‘:

Homeopathic medicines have a long history of use in respiratory tract infections, infections with flu-like symptoms and in epidemics.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine that is individualised for each person rather than for a named disease, however there are a group of remedies that are frequently used in flu-like and respiratory tract infections.

Choose the homeopathic medicine that best fits your particular symptoms.

Commonly used homeopathic remedies for influenza – like symptoms.

Aconite: When it starts suddenly, a fever with chilliness, throbbing pulses, Feeling restless and anxious. After being out in cold dry weather and bitter winds.

Gelsemium: The opposite of Aconite. Comes on slowly. A feeling of heaviness and tiredness in the body and limbs, head feels to heavy to hold up. Chills in the back. A bursting headache. No thirst.

Bryonia: Comes on slowly. Thirsty for cold drinks. Headache, irritability, wants to be in own home, left alone. Everything is worse for movement and better for pressure.

Eupatorium perf:  Severe aches in limbs and back, a feeling “like broken bones”.  Dare not move for pain. A bursting headache. Sore eyeballs. Feels better for talking to someone.

Baptisia: Rapid onset, then falls into a kind of stuporous state with a red face and looks drugged. Falls asleep while talking. May be strange feelings as if limbs are distorted or out of place. May be vomiting and diarrhoea and mucous in the chest.

I am lost for words when I read such irresponsible nonsense. And my amazement is not reduced by studying the rest of their website:

… We provide the public with the facts about homeopathy so they can understand its potential as a viable alternative, and explain the ongoing threat at work to prevent patient access to this safe, effective, sustainable system of medicine.

Our six member Steering Committee is made up of homeopathic practitioners both medical and professional and patients who between them have worked with homeopathic medicine for more than 170 years. They have witnessed its potential as well as the campaign waged against it, and as a group are committed to protect access to this precious alternative at a time when it is needed more than ever…

It is not widely known but as a patient it is your right to choose the kind of medicine you want to use to resolve your issues and maintain your health. Your GP is legally obliged to provide you with information about options so that you can make an informed choice. That is your legal right and your GP’s legal obligation…

Our Steering Group is composed of:

Michael O’Brien Acting Lay Chair
Paul Burnett Communication Lead
Carol Boyce Education Lead
Dr Noel Thomas Practitioner Representative
Karyse Day Lay Representative
Barry Tanner Regulatory Adviser
Ursula Kraus-Harper Specialist Adviser EASE

I feel that these people should be ashamed of themselves.

Do they not have a code of ethics?

Yes they do!

Here it is:

As a member of Homeopathy International, you are personally accountable for your practice. In caring for patients and clients you must:

♦   Respect the patient or client as an individual and honour their integrity as well as respecting their customs, creed, race, ability, sexuality, economic status, lifestyle, political beliefs and religion.

♦   Obtain consent before you give any treatment or care and work according to holistic principles.

♦   Protect confidential information.

♦   Recognise the value of other therapies and health care professionals, both within complementary and conventional medicine and work with other practitioners and refer when it is in the patient’s/client’s best interests. A practitioner must not treat a patient/client in any case which exceeds his/her capacity, training, and competence.

♦   Maintain your professional knowledge and competence on a continuous basis so that you may offer the very best standard of treatment.

♦   Be trustworthy and not exploit the patient or client. Members must maintain the highest morals and behave with courtesy, respect, dignity, discretion and tact.

♦   Act to identify and minimise risk to patient and clients.

These people clearly violate their own code of ethics in more than one way:

  • they do not behave morally,
  • they do not offer the best standard of treatment,
  • they lack the competence to advise the public about the current pandemic.

YES, YOU GUESSED IT: I FEEL SICK!

  • “I feel that these people should be ashamed of themselves.”

    Dear Edzard,
I think YOU should be ashamed
to discredit incessantly from the theorizing eminence-cloud, although you obviously don’t have the slightest idea of the helpless REALITY of conventional medicine and the acutely very helpful effects of homeopathy (e.g. with the life-threatening shortness of breath during and unfortunately also after Sars- CoV-2 infection).

“♦ Recognise the value of other therapies and health care professionals, both within complementary and conventional medicine and work with other practitioners and refer when it is in the patient’s/client’s best interests. A practitioner must not treat a patient/client in any case which exceeds his/her capacity, training, and competence.”

WE recognise the value of other therapies and other health care professionals
    but
if they turn out to be helpless in life-threatening conditions, then the medical ethical conscience tells us that we have to help the patient in some other way! And if we experience that we can help them, then we have best implemented the Hippocratic Oath!
For YOU I hope, YOU never have to feel the helplessness of the conventional medicin in life-threatening shortness of breath!
    So stay sane!

    • you obviously don’t have the slightest idea of the helpless REALITY of conventional medicine and the acutely very helpful effects of homeopathy
      OH REALLY?
thank you for discrediting yourself with a really stupid comment.
the effects of homeopathy are those of a placebo.
if you know otherwise, show us the data [not belief!].

    • e.g. with the life-threatening shortness of breath during and unfortunately also after Sars- CoV-2 infection

My understanding is that clinicians treating Covid-19 have been rather surprised to find severe hypoxia in many patients without shortness of breath.

In any case shortness of breath is never life-threatening. It is a symptom of other problems such as hypercapnia, acidosis, decreased pulmonary compliance, reduced lung volume etc. which may themselves be life-threatening.

you obviously don’t have the slightest idea of the helpless REALITY of conventional medicine

Dr Hummer, what experience do you have of the reality of conventional medicine in dealing with acutely sick individuals?

      • @Dr. JMK

“In any case shortness of breath is never life-threatening”

On the contrary Doctor. In the end, everybody dies from shortness of breath.

        • how do you manage to come up with one stupidity after another?
do you have a special gift?

        • RG,

In health care the term shortness of breath can either be:
          1. A symptom (something reported by the patient), when it is used interchangeably with the word dyspnoea, and refers to the sensation of having to struggle to breathe, or else
          2. A sign (something observed or elicited during a physical examination), when it is used interchangeably with tachypnoea, or increased respiration rate.

At the point of death, an individual no longer has any awareness of breathing (or of anything else), nor are they breathing quickly.

You clearly understand shortness of breath to mean something different, but I don’t know what.

  • I have a question, when you, Dr. Edzard, worked for the college (Exeter) and first professor of complementary medicine, were you financially benefited by the government? Was your research paid by public or private funds. I ask this because it seems you were forced to retire because you went against a government entity. In a nutshell, how many in the world of science is funded by a political position, policy or influence? I believe in science if it is not influenced by research funds for monetary benefits and political gain. Are there actual research facilities in the world that are not influenced by an outcome, mostly a monetary benefit for those who back it? In a nutshell, do scientists actually work for an outcome for the people or comply with government grants, company policy or monetary benefit? You seemed to go against the grain, tell me your true feelings, are scientists persuaded to make a decision for their career? I am referring to medical science, science in other fields is obviously influenced.

    • 1) … were you financially benefited by the government?
      No.
      2) Was your research paid by public or private funds?
Mixed; the main endowment came from Maurice Laing, a private donor and enthusiast of alt med.
      3) do scientists actually work for an outcome for the people or comply with government grants, company policy or monetary benefit?
any decent scientist works to discover the truth, in my view.

      • @EE

“any decent scientist works to discover the truth, in my view”
        You are partially correct.

A decent scientist may prefer to discover truth, I’ll agree with that. However, in the end they will give allegiance to whoever pays the bills.

  • Prof Ernst’s own ethical faux pas comes to mind:

“On September 22, 2005, Sir Michael wrote an official letter of complaint on Clarence House notepaper to the University of Exeter’s vice chancellor, citing a ‘breach of confidence’ after the professor had been sent an early and incomplete draft of the report for comment.

Over the next 13 months, Prof Ernst says he was subjected to interrogations, ‘dozens of cross-examining emails and letters’ and ‘treated as guilty until proven innocent’.

Eventually he was told by the Vice Chancellor that a formal disciplinary warning ‘would not be appropriate’. At the same time, he received a stern warning not to misbehave again.

He wrote: ‘I had been interrogated, investigated, treated like dirt for 13 months, and exonerated in the end. But even while acknowledging that I had not been guilty of any misdemeanour, my vice chancellor had issued an unambiguous warning to me: if I even thought of applying my personal ethical standards in any similar situation in the future, I would not be so lucky as to get away with it again”.

    • oh Sandra; you are adorable in you pursuit of stupidity.

    • Sandra

Seeing that you seem to be bringing up ethical matters, shall we mention your dear friend Hal Huggins? He was so ethical that his license was revoked. He ethically told people he had cured his own MS when he had never suffered from MS. Who ethically admitted the link between amalgam and systemic disease was unproven. Who was so ethical that he diagnosed mercury toxicity in everyone, even when they had no amalgam restorations.

      As judge Nancy Connick said:

“Respondent essentially says “trust me” to the dental profession and the public but provides no reasonable basis upon which he should be trusted.

Given his steadfast and longstanding commitment to his theories in the face of substantial reasoned evidence to the contrary, it is evident that nothing will stop Respondent from practicing the treatments he has developed short of revocation of his license to practice dentistry. Such disciplinary action is also justified by the multiple violations of the Dental Practice Act proven in this matter, especially those involving grossly negligent care.”

Sandra, as with science, you wouldn’t recognise ethics if they ran up and bit you on the arse.

  • I wrote about them here http://ukhomeopathyregulation.blogspot.com/2018/11/homeopathy-international.html

As far as I can work out, they only have one member (if you exlude their “steering group”).

    They are very odd.

  • Members of HI are fundamentally unethical.

    Their code says:
“As a member of Homeopathy International, you are personally accountable for your practice. In caring for patients and clients you must:

♦ Obtain consent before you give any treatment or care and work according to holistic principles.”

My research shows no member of HI (and probably no homeopath of any description) properly informs their patients that the consensus of modern scientific and medical opinion is that homeopathic preparations provide no benefit beyond the placebo.

Any consent obtained by homeopaths takes advantage of the gullibility of vulnerable patients.
    Unethical. Full stop.
    Such practice should stop.
