We have discussed the use of bleach, MMS, and related products as a so-called alternative medicine (SCAM) several times before. This regularly prompts advocates of this approach to claim that they are effective and safe. A recent case report seems to suggest otherwise.

A 9-year-old boy presented with his brother after they accidentally ingested a small amount of undiluted 22.4% sodium chlorite. Symptoms included nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dyspnea. Oxygen saturation remained 71% despite supplemental oxygen (15L/min). The patient was noted to have dark chocolate-appearing blood, minimal urine output, diffuse pallor, and cyanosis. He developed methemoglobinemia, renal failure requiring renal replacement therapy, and hemolysis requiring blood transfusion. The authors reveal that these are the 7th and 8th reported cases of sodium chlorite toxicity by ingestion and the second and third in children.

The authors conclude that Miracle Mineral Solution is a commonly purchased potentially lethal compound that can cause methemoglobinemia with respiratory failure, hemolytic anemia requiring transfusion, and renal failure requiring dialysis.

Despite such cases, MMS continues to be promoted for viral and many other diseases, including cancer. Anyone truthfully stating that it is ineffective and dangerous is branded as a pharma shill who is biased against MMS. Would the ‘bleach boys’ claim the same about an agency like the UK Food Standards Authority?

Let’s see!

This is what the FSA says about MMS:

… Sodium chlorite products vary in concentration, specific dosage and method of ingestion.

With products of weaker strength, any health impact from consuming these products is likely to be gastrointestinal irritation.

For stronger products, the effects can be severe nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea, potentially leading to dehydration and reduced blood pressure.

If the solution is diluted less than instructed, it could cause damage to the gut and red blood cells, potentially resulting in respiratory failure.

There are a range of alleged health benefits related to these products and all are unlikely to be authorised. Only nutrition claims listed in the GB NHC Register (Opens in a new window)may be used in Great Britain.

Health and nutrition claims are required to be authorised under retained Regulation 1924/2006 (Opens in a new window), as amended by The Nutrition (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2019 (Opens in a new window)and The Nutrition (Amendment etc.) (EU Exit) Regulations 2020 (Opens in a new window). As well as being authorised and recorded on the GB NHC Register, the claim must not be ‘false, ambiguous or misleading’.

Some health claims about this product that relate to the treatment of cancer may also be in contravention of the Cancer Act 1939.

Claims range from generic statements about ‘purifying’ the body to more specific ones around cancer and autistic spectrum disorders…

  • Coffin chasing, Ernst?

  • Sodium chlorite is not chlorine dioxide, obviously, and should not be used as a medicine. It has to be mixed with a mild acid solution like citric acid to make chlorine dioxide which can be used medicinealy.

Like ANYTHING the dose makes the poison. Most of you have probably drunk some chlorine dioxide at one time or another! It is used as a water purifier. Chlorine dioxide used as a medicine has to be done very carefully starting with very low dosages, a drop or two diluted greatly and work up a drop at a time.

Everything is “potentially lethal” if you dont know what you are doing with it. So there is no point in highlighting these stories unless it is just to create an atmosphere of fear about something. I guess that is the point of this blog.

    • And to be clear one doesnt take chlorine dioxide directly, which is a gas. It is a water solution that is infused with chlorine dioxide so it is already diluted greatly. Mixing the two solutions to make chlorine dioxide requires precision in the mixing process.

You are just as hopelessly ignorant as the other idiots who claim that bleach is a medicine. Sodium chlorite produces chlorine dioxide when it reacts with acids. Now you guess what happens when it enters the stomach …

Please get the following in that nondescript structure protruding upward from between your shoulders called, for want of a better word, ‘head’:
Chlorine dioxide is NOT a medicine. It is a bleach and a disinfectant, without medicinal uses. It does not cure or treat any condition.

The fact that it is safe to ingest in minute quantities is completely irrelevant. Anything is safe to ingest in minute quantities. But that does not mean that anything is a medicine.

      • thank you
I admire your patience with knowledge-resistant chaps like Roger

      • Chlorine dioxide is being used successfully by lots of folks despite vituperation by people like you and the CDC, whether you want to believe it or not.
A close friend of mine cured here stage 4 pancreatic cancer with CO2.
I cured my lifetime of postnasal congestion by nebulizing it and taking it orally..
So get past your predjudice and check it out.

If by ‘successfully’ you mean ‘without too much intestinal damage’, yes, then you can say that most of those idiots who drink this bleach products survive relatively unharmed. If you read the testimonials of these idiots, the emphasis lies on the fact that it is relatively harmless; any diarrhoea and intestinal cramps as a result of using it are considered ‘a good sign’, sigh …
The second thing that is proclaimed emphatically is that it kills pathogens — and yes, it does, outside the body.
And the third and by far stupidest common claim of these idiots is that they ‘have been using it for years, and didn’t get sick, so it is great for preventing disease!’
Well, I have NOT been drinking bleach, and I also haven’t gotten sick in many, many years. So I proclaim that to stay healthy, you should NOT drink bleach. THAT is the way to prevent all sorts of illnesses!

A close friend of mine cured here stage 4 pancreatic cancer with CO2.

          This is a lie.
You have no friends Bleach does not cure cancer, and most certainly not pancreatic cancer.

@Edzard: I think it is time for our friend Roger to say goodbye to this blog. His trolling and generally inane comments may be tolerable up to a degree, and sometimes even humorous, but I would draw the line at touting dangerous cancer cures that will undoubtedly cause some desperately ill people to try drinking bleach – guaranteed to their severe detriment, because upsetting the digestive tract is the last thing you want to do in cancer patients.

          • Richard, I somewhat disagree.

Who would take Roger seriously; he clearly can’t even be bothered to read his comments before he posts them.

A close friend of mine cured here [sic] stage 4 pancreatic cancer with CO2.

Carbon dioxide can, of course, rid a person of all known human illnesses, simultaneously.

I don’t think Roger is trolling: Internet trolls tend to be quite intelligent.

          • Yeah, homeopaths are all about the big buck$. I am sure you have seen so many of us living the fast life. Come on over and visit my NYC penthouse and I can drive you around the city in my Bugatti with my pal Bezos all paid for by selling $5 Boiron blue tubes to the tiny percent of the population that uses homeopathy. As Magical as homeopathy itself!

There must be a huge market for ODs on sodium chlorite; its in all the news around the world. I will get my marketing team right on it. Big bucks there!

And censorship seems like the method of choice for the mainstream So-called Skeptics (SS). Good luck with that. Dont investigate what we say, eliminate it! You obviously are all knowing so what could possibly be gained? Particularly kicking me off this backwater of the internet. That will make all the difference in the world.

          • @Roger

And censorship seems like the method of choice for the mainstream So-called Skeptics (SS).

It didn’t take that long for Goodwin’s law to come true.

Dont investigate what we say, eliminate it! You obviously are all knowing so what could possibly be gained? Particularly kicking me off this backwater of the internet. That will make all the difference in the world.

I see. It is incumbent upon others to investigate every asinine claim you and your friends make. Therefore, I set forth to investigate your claim. I drank MMS as prescribed on the bottle. After a few days, my stomach started to hurt and resulted in bloody stool, probably because my stomach lining is being oxidized. Also, I was diagnosed with Methemoglobinemia. Clearly, MMS didn’t work. Therefore, your claim that MMS cures cancer and other aliments is utter nonsense.

Now, where is my homeopathic remedy for MMS poisoning? You better get to work on that instead of crying censorship in every other post.

          • Hi Roger, it’s time again to ban you from this blog. too much nonsense + the last one was too bad taste to publish
            BYE!

          • @Roger

And censorship seems like the method of choice …

The hilarious thing is that people like you complain about ‘censorship’ all the time. Which means that there isn’t any … And so far, even your must inane comments were posted here without being withheld.

But yes, I am in favour of ‘censoring’ certain things, such as inciting desperately ill people to harm themselves by promoting the ingestion of bleach or take any other fake cancer ‘cure’. Just like it is undesirable to tell people mix up their own explosives or do other hazardous and/or stupid things.

But, as Pete Attkins correctly remarks, it is pretty unlikely that anyone would seriously listen to what you say.

          • @R. Daneel

It didn’t take that long for Goodwin’s law to come true.

I have been following Roger’s agressive ignorant comments and his promotion of all (!) pseudo-medical treatments on this blog for some time. You can be sure that after a short time he will invoke Godwin’s law because he has no arguments at all.

        • So we can conclude that homeopathy is no good for postnasal congestion.

    • @Roger

Is there a homeopathic preparation of Sodium chlorite? If not, there seems to be a huge market for it, as a cure for symptoms caused due to MMS overdoses. Maybe you could team up with Dana, corner the market and make big bucks.
